This is one of the favorite destinations for many travelers. Here you will find many miles of beach, beautiful sand, clear water and warm weather. The area is also growing as a tourist destination due to the Daniel Oduber International Airport, which gets many flights from the north. So, tourists who only want to enjoy these beaches do not need to get to the capital city.

Although the city of Liberia is not a metropolis as San José, Liberia is a nice quiet city where a colonial atmosphere still exists. There you also find anything you might need for your trip: drugstores, banks, gas stations, hotels for different tastes, restaurants, fast food restaurants and a shopping mall with cinemas.

Some activities:
Sea kayaking: The Pacific waters are quite predictable during the dry season. Many hotels rent the equipment.
Boating: In any of the main beaches in the area you can rent a boat to explore the surroundings or by asking your local tour operator or at your hotel.
Hiking: There are several sites in Guanacaste including Rincón de la Vieja and Santa Rosa National Parks.
Fishing: The Pacific region is divided into the Northern, Central, and Southern fishing areas, with conditions varying with the seasons in each area.

Africa Mia
Africa in Costa Rica: Ten kilometers from the city of Liberia towards San José you will find África Mía, a park where you will be able to admire animal species from Africa, like zebras, giraffes, antelopes, gazelles, wild boars and ostrichs. A great option to enjoy Africa Costa Rican style. You can arrange a tour from your hotel.

By car:
If you are coming from San José, take the Pan american Highway 1 north, that will take you to Liberia.

By bus:
San José-Liberia: 24 Street, 5 and 7 Avenues. Buses leave everyday, every hour from 6 am to 6 pm. The trip covers 217km and takes around four and a half hours. Phone: 222-1650.

Puntarenas-Liberia: in front of main terminal. Buses leave every day at different times during morning and afternoon. The trip takes around three hours. Phone: 663-1752.

San José-Nicoya (by Liberia): 5 Avenue, 14 and 16 Streets. Tracopa-Alfaro Terminal.

San José-Nicoya (by Tempisque): daily service, same address as by Liberia.

San José-Cañas: bus service everyday at 14th Street, Ist and 3rd Avenues. The ride takes 3:30 hours.

San José-Sámara: Buses everyday at 12:30 and 18:30. Terminal at 14th and 16th Streets, 5th Avenue. The ride takes 5 hours.

• Playa Grande and Ostional are nesting grounds for marine turtles.
• Santa María, Orosí and Rincón de la Vieja volcanos are great hiking areas.
• Palo Verde National Park is good for spotting migratory birds.
